Niall Burne, Actor at the Hammer and Anvil
Tiger-Eye to Broken Summer-Sky Warlord
Niall was always the steady rock for his sister to lean on and the voice of wisdom for his younger brothers. He was patient and perceptive, having found out as a young lad how much one could learn if the adults forgot you were in the room. He made great company; a sweet, chatty and friendly boy who spent more time patching up his mates’ quarrels instead of instigating his own. Very little got him down and he tackled life with an earnest hope that comes from believing that all things are possible if one tries hard enough.
Sadness dominates his aura these days, along with a tiredness of spirit. He feels like a powerless failure and a fool for failing to defend his Clan, even though there was nothing a Summer Sky warlord could have done against angry Sapphire and Gray. And for not realizing the Clan leadership was doing terrible things in time to convince his family to leave it. Niall has always had an overdeveloped sense of responsibility that comes of being the oldest brother in the family and it just kills him if he can’t find a way to make things better.
He’s learned that life isn’t fair and that nothing can be trusted- not authority figures or Protocol itself when a strong Dark-Jewel decides not to follow it. Safety is an illusion and people lie to you, so you need to ready to have the rug yanked out from under you at any moment. Niall questions everything now and has to hope that that will be enough to see the next danger in time to ride the wave instead of being drowned by it.
Niall has nothing more to lose, and has embraced the freedom in that. At first it with a weary sort of resignation, but with the help of the theater troop he’s slowly been learning to enjoy life again. He still has his lapses- long nights howling into his pillow or when his colleagues have to gently pry deceptively fragile fingers away from his beer, but he’s learned to live in the now. Niall Sheane was a fool who died with his Clan, but Niall Burne is a decent, funny guy who’s as generous with his mates as his lovers and might be someone to be proud of.
Niall Burne might even deserve a new family and a real future someday if he plays his cards right.
